Roman Castrum of the 5th Macedonian Legion

The 5th Macedonian Legion was transferred to Potaissa in 168 C.E. to defend the northern Dacia. In the first half of the 3rd century, Potaissa became one of the most important cities in the Dacian province with a population of 25,000.

Many ancient artifacts were discovered at the site (architectural remains, sculptures, mosaics, inscriptions on rock, coins, and small objects) which are on display at different collections and museums.

The Potaissa Castrum is one of the largest castrums that functioned for an extended period of time. With a length of 573 m (north – south) and a width of 408 m (east – west), the total surface area the castrum occupies is 23.37 ha.
